Maid Abuse - Help is at hand
By Raymond Lo Wan Mou @ 7:33 PM :: 767 Views :: 2 Comments :: :: Women

Dear All,

Just this month alone, there are 3 cases of maid abuse being charged in Court namely, "Maid molested on 1st day," " Hungry maid beaten for eating milk powder" and " Employer raped maid who cut her own waist to release her anguish"

To say that these employers are inhuman is an understatement.

             I am very concerned.

However, the reply from MOM is a source of comfort and any netizens who know that their neighbouring maids need help, or have heard from their own maids that their contemporaries are being abused can seek help as outlined by MOM in her reply to me.

Quote - "Dear Mr Lo,

We refer to your email of 15 Jul and 28 Jul 2008 to REACH.

2        We applaud your concern over the well-being of the foreign domestic workers (FDWs) in Singapore.  We would like to assure you that the Ministry is commited to ensuring the well-being of FDWs in employment here.  In 1998, the Penal Code was amended to increase by one-and-a-half times the penalties for acts of abuse against FDW by the employers or household members.  In addition, under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act, all employers must provide their FDWs adequate rest and meals.  The penalty for employers who breach such work permit conditions is a fine of up to $5,000  and jail up to 6 months.  Employers who are convicted of abuse are also permanently barred from employing another FDW.

3        Currently, employers who hire FDWs for the first time must attend the Employers' Orientation Programe (EOP) before submitting the FDW's Work Permit (WP) application.  Failure to comply with this requirement will render the WP application unsuccessful.  The EOP provides employers with information on employing a FDW, including basic understanding of their role and responsibilities  as employers.

4        Notwithstanding the above, the Ministry currently operates a toll-free FDW helpline (tel : 1800-3395505) where FDWs or members of public may call us if the need advice or help.  Calls received include complaints on FDWs not paid their salaries on time, being deployed illegally or other well -being issues. As such, if you have information on FDWs who may have been abused by their employers, you may forward such information to us via email at mom_fmmd@mom.gov.sg or telephone number at 6438 5122.

5        We thank you for your feedback.

Yours Sincerely,

Wong Wei Phing (Mdm)

Obstacles

OBSTACLES

(PART 1)

All of us don’t like obstacles. Things may have been going on very smoothly and suddenly out of the blue appears some hitches. The bandwagon is unable to move further, as its tyres have sunk into the soft dirty mud. This is what happens to many of us in our careers.

Obviously obstacles are of two types: one is the few and major kind and the other are the many and minor kind. An obstacle can be irritating at times because it confuses us, makes us helpless and all sources of help seem to dry up because others may be away or busy in other things and are not available to assist us.

The main objective is how to overcome obstacles. Obstacles will always exist and there is no way one can rid them totally. As we learn to overcome one obstacle after another, we observe that new obstacles appear in the horizon. Just like the night sky which is dotted with many stars, if a person’s life is full of obstacles then it is high time to consider something to do about it rather than just drift with the problems.

Let us look at some of the common type of obstacles:

(a) Physical barriers

The participants were ready for the obstacle test. The game started off with the firing of a sports gun into the air. The participants sprung into action – running, and then jumping across the metal hurdles, after which they quickly jumped into a small and quickly swam to the other side, ran further and picked up a flag and dashed up to a hillock to plant it at the top. The participant who was able to plant the flag first received rousing cheers. He was declared the winner for the test.

(b) Communication barriers:

Some recruits on the job suffer from shyness. They are afraid to ask questions and wait patiently hoping that someone would notice them and perhaps lend a helping hand. As we learn the job and after some time when everything seems to be at the finger tips, then we have already overcome one career barrier i.e. the barrier of shyness & initial difficulties or learning.

Communication is an art and it must be learnt and practiced daily. Lack of communication can construct insurmountable barriers to the person. It is akin to that of a person in a foreign land and is unable to speak in the native language.

Miscommunication, on the other hand, leads to misunderstandings. In this case it is due to poor human relations. As you look around, you will notice many type of people such as those possessing inferiority complex, aggressive ones and other complexes like distrust of people around them because in their past history they have been hurt or wrong by someone. These people tend to build an “invisible wall” around them so that no one can touch them.

Next we have some people who are rude or impatient. They are clock watchers and they fail to realize that the clock is ever watching them. As time passes by, their face is no longer friendly but it looks like a dull old silent-ticking clock. They have put all their manners behind them and are out of touch with reality most of the time.

It is ideal to learn to be understanding of the people around us and treat them humanely while doing our job to the best and serving all well.  If we cannot connect or relate with people, then we will land up in a sorry state soon. We will become isolated and people around us will unconsciously practice the ‘principle of containment’. This is not a healthy thing if it happens to us.

Just “like the bulb filaments that lights up with the right condition and contact, sparks of good human relations also flows in a right conductive environment’. This conducive environment is generated by us. It is up to us whether we want to make our work-place an excellent office or a troubled and working hell.

© Knowledge barriers:

All jobs entail some basic knowledge and as we work on, we accumulate knowledge and experience. We must also know that many knowledge which we adhere to or hold it dearly has become obsolete. We have to learn to discard them and adopt new ones. In this ever changing world, many scholars and degree holders are realizing that their qualifications which they struggled to acquire them are already obsolete. This is the twist that can cause pain to people who are not ready for this surprising world.

Knowledge fast moving into archaic or outdated does not means that we are also out-of-date. We can manoeuvre out of this circumstance by learning new things and using our old knowledge in new ways. One example is the security issue now haunting the world. There are still gaps in the security knowledge but the realm of unknowns is shrinking because new things are coming up in the market. New machines and inventions are marching into the world market. We must be fast to know what is happening in the market so as to close the gap in our understanding.

(d) Time hurdle:

Looking at how the staff, army of astronomers and other scientists work at NASA (the American Space Centre), we realize that they are ever fighting with time. The time hurdle is greatly felt when they wish to launch into orbit a spacecraft or a satellite. There are many steps to do many things to check, things to fine tune and ensure that things are 100% all right before the countdown is ordered and the launch is set. When the spaceship fires up towards the Heavens, there is a sense of relief at the Space Centre because a great achievement has taken place.

Solving many teething problems as and when they appear while working in a cohesive team is something admirable that many organizations aspire to achieve.

OBSTACLES

(PART 2)

Having noted some of the types of obstacles (in part 1), it is time how to deal with them:

(1) Improve our Intelligence

Many parents are obsessed by the fact of IQ and they leave no stones unturned in their bid that their child secures a place in the University or Polytechnic. In the same manner, the same applies to the employee on the job. An officer cannot afford to remain at the same level of intelligence as he was twenty years ago. He must improve though it may not be his IQ but his style and ways. It is the ability to solve working problems that counts. Service delivery and fulfillment are now more important than ever.

(2)   Improve our EQ

How we mix with people and how we relate with them is becoming important. Emotional intelligence is crucial and can make the difference. To become sensitive is not a good thing but can spoilt the work environment.

(3) Improve our stamina

You look around and see people engaged in many pursuits like learning to dance, sign up for exercises in a gym, practice breathing, join a group to interact after office hours like learning music or engaged in social activities or fund raising to help the poor and needy. You may wonder why all these people take time and pain to do all these and you are tired, overstressed and seem to have little or no time. Actually these people have learned to manage themselves well and are developing their resilience or stamina to cope with challenges. All these outdoor activities build up a person to become strong and not to be panic stricken at little things.

(4) Improve our health

The newspapers have highlighted that more and more people are obese here. Instead of resorting to ‘cholesterol lowering’ drugs. Learning to take care of diet, knowing more about food, nutrition & calories will help a person to become fit and healthy. A healthy body is essential to cope with obstacles.

(5) Tone down our expectation

Learning to accept rejections & failures and tolerating some flaws in others instead of resorting to outright criticisms goes a long way to assist us in minimizing obstacles.

(6) Improve our knowledge

As the years pass by, we will surely have a reservoir of experience. Our knowledge can also be improved by reading more, knowing the legislations, talk to people, getting to know how they deal with problems on the job and get involved in projects to help the organization.

(7) Be receptive to new ideas & thoughts

By changing our attitude and way of looking at things in a new perspective, it helps a lot.  New ideas and thoughts add a new dimension in our career.

(8) Work in a team

Help one another and serve the organization and public well. In fact “the team is the best umbrella that I know”. Working in a team uses the power of synergy which is useful for its members.

(9) Adopt healthy values

Values are useful things that we always adhere to. “Learning to be graceful, not forceful” is the new trend to overcome stress and modern day challenges. Taming our temper helps us in our daily life to move forward with smoothness and ease instead of creating frictions, obstacles and unnecessary difficulties.

(10) Practice positive thinking

The pessimist always thinks that the world is going to end, our service is short-lived and there is the danger of being retrenched or made redundant is always there. This kind of negative thinking and subsequent idle talks is bad. We must practice positive thinking as part of our healthy living. There is a common saying: “Don’t worry, be happy”. Better subscribe to positive thoughts to make your day bright.

(11) Discuss

A meeting is not a meeting to meet quorum or mark attendance. It is a meeting of the minds of a group of people. Discussion is useful because things get thrashed out and some useful things come to light. Plans are made and implemented.

If we follow all these, our batteries would be recharged. We have extra power within us

A CAN FULL OF CREATIVE IDEAS
By Om Nath Panday @ 3:21 PM :: 491 Views :: 0 Comments

A CAN FULL OF CREATIVE IDEAS IS WORTH MORE THAN A KILO-BAR OF GOLD

Singapore is on the threshold of great breakthrough in the area of innovation. As more and more people come forward with creative ideas on how to improve our lives, how to make Singapore a happier place, a place whereby people from many lands – far and near – love to visit Singapore and admire its natural beauty, its enterprising people, its many wonderful services and excellent infrastructure and best of all our civic mindedness.

Now there is a change in the paradigm of thinking of managers. Leaders of all organizations now consider that people are no longer mere passport sized photos with individualized alpha-numerical digits in a p-file system. People are made of flesh, blood and bones. As people begin to realize that they possess their feelings of passion towards work and thoughts of how to improve the organizations which a lively robot or a wonderful system does not possess, people are becoming more important asset than inputs, end product and process or manufacturing cycle. A worker who is due to expire his work cycle should not despair but think of how to boost his organization to greater height of progress before he leaves his office for retirement.

Singapore is brimming with ideas and success as the innovation & creative program gears up for the good of everyone. We buy canned food and many things in cans but A CAN OF WONDERFUL CREATIVE IDEAS IS WORTH MORE THAN A KILO-BAR OF SHINING GOLD.

A fisherman once happened to see a floating bottle. He netted it and opened the cork of the bottle. Out the bottle slipped a piece of note which read as: “An idea a day will surely go a long way to solve most of your life’s problems. Please make use of your ideas beside your hands”. The note was dated in light blue ink as 1.9.1989. To the fisherman it was totally useless. He flung the bottle back to the sea.

He continued to fish until he caught some big fishes and went home happily. He remained a poor fisherman up to his last days before death. If he would have heeded the bottle’s advice, perhaps he would have become a better person in his lifetime.

The Open Secret That Is Difficult To Accept or Believe
By Om Nath Panday @ 9:19 AM :: 525 Views :: 0 Comments

THE FORMULA OF SUCCESS

A group of ten people sat around the oval conference table. There is teleconferencing device in the room to facilitate communication with the branches located many miles away and some in overseas. Mr. Jack Lim, a middle-aged man wearing a sky blue tie, long sleeved shirt, a dark coloured pant and a pleasant smile on his face was seated. There were five young men and four ladies. All of them were in deep discussion on how to improve the sales figures. Mr. Jack is the marketing manager.

In the process of the meeting, they also held a brainstorming session. Although the air-conditioned room was cold, the mind of the young manager and his sales personnel were active; ideas flowed in thick and fast. With note pad and pencil, each of them scribbled their thoughts on to it.

The company JKL Corporation was able to launch its latest product into the market. It was the effort and total devotion of its personnel that the firm was able to do well. The sales figures chalked up impressively. The other work units i.e. the engineering department, R & D unit and the production unit also did well. The boss was happy with the progress and all the staff was satisfied and happy too. Everything was moving on with great harmony.

This happy state of affair in the example given above is not an exaggeration. It is possible in any organization. Sometimes a person wonders what is the secret of such a happy state of affair.

Once the press asked a top student in Singapore what was his secret formula for his brilliant success in the GCE 'O' Level examination. He replied, "The secret is that I worked hard, work regularly and worked with my heart and soul put into my studies". The journalist was temporarily taken aback because he didn't expect to get such a simple and ordinary reply. He felt that the student was hiding the truth. He pressed on further with another question. The student answered and added in: "... I am telling you that this is difficult to accept or believe but I must say that this is an open secret". Finally the journalist smiled and was pleased with the teenager's reply.

Therefore the secret to success is:
* to always work hard, work regularly and work with full

  devotion & energy
* that there must be total commitment to work
* that there should be respect with fellow colleagues and

   teamwork
* loyalty to the organisation
* accountability in our work, and
* integrity in our thought and action

Now that these secrets are out in the open, it is clear what could have been holding us back in our pace of work. Although these may seem to be intangible in nature, this style or attitude has a tremendous influence and effect on our career and self-worth

As compared to pursuing things on an individual basis, the team effort is also very important for any organization. It is the effort of everyone that makes any venture or project become a reality. The ingredient of success must always be applied. As we work, we plan, think, note down our ideas, analyze, design a method and work towards our goal. These habits inculcated within us are good because it gives us the focusing power or concentration. Without focus or exploring how to improve ourselves, we cannot take off properly.

The rocket before being launched is thoroughly planned and checked. Once it is all right, then it blasts off into space. It moves into space on an exploration mission. Work wise we are like in the rocket situation. It is proper planning and good habit that allows us to excel. Once the rocket blast off towards space, the onlookers on the ground, looking upward at early dawn, are struck with great admiration and pride at the new brilliant silver 'star' that is rapidly accelerating towards the Heavens.

Practising '3-in-One Coffee' Style
By Om Nath Panday @ 3:42 PM :: 567 Views :: 3 Comments :: :: The Young Ones, Women, Far and Away: Overseas Singaporeans, REACH Events/Activities/Workgroup Activities, Aspirations for REACH, General

PRACTISING '3-IN-1 COFFEE' STYLE

Many years ago, when our office was located at Collyer Quay in downtown Raffles Place, I went to the staff canteen. At that time, a new vendor has moved in. This lady, I believed was new in this food business, was at her counter. I requested for a glass of coffee.

Meanwhile I looked at the display tray and picked up a curry bun. The canteen lady was busy at work in preparing the coffee for me. This is what I saw: She took a pair of scissors, cut open a plastic sachet of Nescafe coffee. After pouring the coffee mixture into the glass, she fills it with warm water from the nearby kettle. She then poured some condensed milk (dice brand) into it and then using an oversized spoon, she stirred clumsily with it. Part of the coffee spilled onto the counter bench, dirtying the surface and also spilling on to her apron.

I then paid her 60 cents for the glass of coffee. As I ate the bun and drank the coffee, an idea arose into my mind. The 3-in-1 coffee, available as 40 packets per pack is easily purchased at about $4.60 at any supermarkets or NTUC Fairprices. Making a rough calculation in my mind, I realised that per packet works out to about 11 or 12 cents only.

I thought hard: "Why should I pay this seller 60 cents when I am not getting a warm hand brewed coffee? Since she is providing a 3-in-1 type of service, I can also buy and keep some 3-in-1 coffee packets in my office. When I required, I just need to open the sachet and pour in warm water into my desk mug". I felt bad that she was cheating me.

I therefore stopped buying coffee from the canteen. She has indirectly given me the idea to use 3-in-1 coffee. I just bought the bun or other food stuff. As time passed by, I completely stopped going to the canteen and started to buy elsewhere because she was at times rude in her behaviour. It was not even three months; she left as she was forced to fold up her business.

The canteen lady was merely practicing short cut in her business. Instead of making fresh coffee, she was using the 3-in-1 coffee packets to serve her customers. In this manner, she thought that she could greatly cut down on her effort to make coffee. Her pricing was unjustified in the eyes of customers because she was not providing fresh coffee. To make matter worse, she was openly showing to customers her flaws of short cuts i.e. using the 3-in-1 coffee packets to prepare in their presence.

A CHEAT NEVER PROSPERS. In no time, she was forced to fold up her business because of poor sales. Creativity does not mean to do short cuts or be creative in cheating people. She was short of providing the basic service to customers.

There is always a difference in taste between the freshly made coffee and that of the 3-in-1 coffee. We can't fool the public. Always remember that THE PUBLIC IS THE KING. Whether we like it or not, in this republic or anywhere you can't fool the customers. If we cannot provide good service to the public, then it is the public who will decide our future.

Well, her style of modifying effort did not pay off. It is apparent that she was perceived as being lazy. Even though she have put in some effort, money and time to set up the stall, her stall and dreams fell like a pack of loosely arranged cards. So this is what happens when we are not careful about our business. Things that once were in her hands became things out of hand for her.

If one is not committed to the business, he has to pay for it in the course of his life. This simple tale, which happened long ago, has a valuable moral: it is a reminder of why we should provide good service to our customers.

Yours Harmoniously

YOURS HARMONIOUSLY

As I took the morning NEL train today, I was greeted by the sight of many colourful traditional costumes (saris, kebayas, songkoks, cheongsams and even a kimono) worn by young school girls, boys and teachers. As the train glided on with its usual precision, these wonderful commuters alighted at their following stations: at Boon Keng, at Farrer Park, at Dhoby Ghaut and Outram Park (which are located enroute to their respective schools). Immediately I realized that today, it is Racial Harmony Day.

Since 2002, Racial Harmony Day has been commemorated annually with an anchor event based on a theme. In 2002, it was Racial Harmony Games Day; in 2003, it was Racial Harmony Music and Dance Day. This time around, it is Racial Harmony Discovery Day.

Harmony through Discovery Trail: pupils work together in multi-racial teams and participate in a series of fun, treasure hunt-type activities (through enjoyable outdoor activities, they learn teamwork and make new friends of other races). These activities help to tap pupils' knowledge and experience of the ethnic cultures in Singapore. The education officers have in line many things for the pupils like working out answers, solving puzzles and completing tasks in the race to reach their destination of harmony. Things are done on a storyline basis to make life easier for the young minds to assimilate.

At a video show in Anderson Junior College, students played out short sketches to depict racial stereotypes and insensitivities. The sketches take pain to show how possible misunderstandings can be solved and the importance of fostering meaningful ties between the different races in Singapore. As pupils develop leadership qualities and meeting challenges together, we are assured of a safe and happy future.

Acting Education Minister Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam in a recent address said that "as we go about our daily lives, in making the small efforts to get to know each other better and develop a sense of comfort with each other, our social fabric remains strong and vibrant; we preserve the peace and we continue to prosper". We must "re-discover the roots and branches and find the great charm of the different cultures that we have in Singapore".

Coming to the college sketch about misunderstanding, I once remembered an interesting incident. I was then very young about ten years old. My mother, her friend and I were at the market. A fat European lady was passing by. My mother's friend giggled after saying in Hindi,"Oh! My God. See how she walks like a penguin with her two arms slightly raised by her sides. I wonder from which shop does she buys her rice?"

Almost immediately the European lady shot back in Hindi: "Mem, I buy the rice from the same shop which you patronize". I noted that there was anger and frustration in her voice. My mother's friend was shocked and surprised beyond expectation; she apologized profusely. I watched this small drama and was amused that the European lady knew our mother tongue. Surely, it is not a good practice to talk bad about another in their presence in our own dialect. Even if the person may not know the language, the gestures and facial expression, the tone of voice and accompanied laughters can tell a thousand things about us.

Yes, as for the European lady and my mother's friend, they became the best of friends after this strange meeting. It may seem to be a trivial matter to some of us but the hurt feelings can be damaging. How can we foster good human relations with our fellow humans? Fortunately we are civic minded people here. Recently there has been racial graffiti scrawled in public places in Australia. Racial riots or tension is common in many third world countries. The once picturesque paradise-like Yugoslavia was disintegrated due to ethnic cleansing and racial discrimination. The Nazis in history considered that the Germans were of superior breed.

Mahatma Gandhi's grandson ever came to Singapore in 1969. As a well-known traveling musician, he sang a moving song which went like this: "How many times must the cannon balls fly before they are forever banned..." He was appealing for world peace in the wake of super power rivalry between the USA & USSR. The war between North & South Vietnams was going on in aggressive manner: there were plenty of rocket fires accompanied by the fury of napalm bombs and carpet bombings. Even cloud seeding was rampant to bring heavy rain so as to upset each other's war plans.

Once the national fabric and nation's sovereignty is torn and tattered, it is not easy for a leader to tailor them. There is still the search for lasting peace in civil war-torn Iraq and Afghanistan. The International Red Cross, the United Nations and other humanitarian organizations are working hard to bring food and shelter, peace and happiness to the millions on Earth.

There is great beauty in what the Minister said. It is not easy to preserve racial harmony but in Singapore we are very lucky because the government has taken great care concerning national integration. Our leaders, both in the government and community level are visionary in their effort and approach to promote national unity and harmony. Our very survival of nationhood lies in this value. We must not forget the national core values.

We are a nation of rich cultures and heritage. Each of us has many things to contribute. Take for instance the Malays. From them we have the Malay jogets, batik and songkok, Javanese spa massage, "gotong-royong' (kampung style spirit of co-operation), nasi ayam & ketupats, the rebana, colourful Malay wedding, congkat and sepak takraw, skill of silat, art of kris making, mouth watering traditional kueh-kueh, durian cake, satay, sambal, use of Indonesian jamus, colourful kite-flying, top spinning competition, exotic Islamic embroidery, artistic sculptures and so on.

Indians has contributed things like the shiny glass bangles and 'bindis' (forehead dots), artistic jewel designs, carvings of Gods and Goddess in stone, Bharata Natyam, Kathakali dance, snake charmers, delicious vadai, tosai, puree, battura and naan, Indian sweets, sweet meat, kima, chicken tandoori, the tabla and harmonium, Indian henna painting and Kolam. Chinese have given us the art of abacus, use of jades and pearls, Ming vases, stone sculptures, Chinese calligraphy, Fengshui knowledge, martial arts, traditional drama and street operas, Chinese flutes, herbal medicine, tasty cuisine like frog leg soup and herbal chicken and etc. The Peranakans has given us the fusion of baba culture. Europeans introduced to us turkey meat, the joy of Christmas, Easter eggs, Valentine Day, the melodious piano, the tradition of confession in churches, the cheers of musical bells, beautiful Sundays and Western music.

We must always remember the national pledge: "We, the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one united people regardless of race, language or religion to build a democratic society based on justice and equality so as to achieve happiness, prosperity and progress for our nation". As the strain of the pledge, said in unison, floated in the bright and colourful atmosphere of SM Lee Kuan Yew's 80th birthday celebration chamber, the father and architect of modern Singapore himself was deeply moved.

Pledge for Racial Harmony:

We, the people in Singapore, declare that religious harmony is vital for peace, progress and prosperity in our multi-racial and multi-religious Nation.

We resolve to strengthen religious harmony through mutual tolerance, confidence, respect, and understanding.

We shall always
* Recognise the secular nature of our State,
* Promote cohesion within our society,
* Respect each other's freedom of religion,
* Grow our common space while respecting our diversity,
* Foster inter-religious communications,

and thereby ensure that religion will not be abused to create conflict and disharmony in Singapore.

RACIAL HARMONY DAY
By Om Nath Panday @ 10:48 AM :: 1255 Views :: 1 Comments ::

I share with you what I wrote about Racial Harmony last year.
