REACH conducted a quick poll from 7 July to 30 July 2009 to gather public sentiments on the role of the Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs).
A Special Select Committee of Parliament had submitted nine names for appointment by the President as Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs). The nine new names represent different segments of society, including three-time Sportswoman of the Year, Ms Joscelin Yeo.
21 (48%) agreed that NMPs play a key role in providing non-partisan views on a wide variety and range of issues discussed in Parliament.
17 (39%) agreed that the nine nominees, forming a diverse mix and their interests and backgrounds will ensure more alternative views in Parliament.

440 respondents (41%) agreed that the Budget measures are sufficient to help preserve jobs for Singaporeans; 501 agreed that the Budget has provided enough help for businesses (47%); 297 agreed that the Budget has provided adequate help to help families and households tide over the downturn (28%), and 383 agreed that the Budget will enhance Singapore’s long-term economic prospects (36%).

23 welcomed Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience (SPUR), a new 2-year tripartite programme to motivate companies to send their employees for re-training and skills upgrading during the downturn under the Government’s Continuing Education and Training programme with the government subsidising up to 90% of the training fees.
