Pick A Litter A Day

Feedback via email

I suggest starting a campaign on "Pick a litter a day" to work towards creating a clean and gracious society like the Japanese. Hopefully the authorities will take up my suggestion.

Reply from National Environment Agency

Dear Sir

We refer to your suggestion to REACH to start a "Pick a litter a day" campaign and which was referred to NEA for attention.

2          We appreciate your suggestion. We agree that picking up litter in public areas would help individuals better understand the efforts and costs needed to clean up after litterbugs. It would serve to remind them not to litter and in turn inconvenience others by dirtying the environment. Currently NEA supports many schools and community groups that organise litter-picking events to inculcate such values. We will be happy to share your idea of a "Pick a litter a day" with these interest groups to reinforce the anti-littering efforts.

Sincerely

ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT
NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT AGENCY

There seem to be less litter bins around than before. Even a litter bin removed from a handicap post in my carpark was not replaced. To discourage littering, building owners, town councils and relevant authorities should make litter bins more accessible for people to drop off their litter without having to hold their litter too long in search for a litter bin. Help the people to help Singapore remain clean.

I have just come back from a trip to Tokyo and was impressed by the cleanliness there. The streets are clean and you can hardly find rubbish. At fast food restaurants, patrons will clear their trays and separate rubbish into slots for combustible rubbish and plastic drinks covers. Maybe McDonalds here should start something like this. Elsewhere drinks vending machines have slots for recycling cans and botttles attached to it. There are not many rubbish bins around but if there are these have different slots for recyclable and non-recyclable rubbish. I want to add that the NEA is not pro-active and responsive enough. I have sent a couple of email that someone has been hoarding cardboard boxes, cupboards and buckets at an area behind my apartment block but to date no action is being take to remove them. Please, if we take the effort to write in, please do something about it!

Dear Fellow Citizens,

Pick a litter a day is the way to go.

The most effective way is when we see a litter bug throw his/her litter, we as a social responsible citizen pick up the litter with his/her knowledge, and cart it in the nearest bin provided in full view of public members. Most litter bugs in general will feel embarrassed - he will learn a lesson. More importantly, we also show to other public members it is not right to litter.

The message will pass on....

WARMEST REGARDS

The foreign friend said "Singapore looked like Hong Kong in the 1970s"

If all of us care to get involve in anti-littering and also help to maintain the environment clean by picking up lying litter, I surely believe that we are moving towards achieving the status of CLEANEST NATION OF THE WORLD. This would obviously make us proud.

I agree with William. Schools and parents should instill in our children the idea of not littering. I'm glad to see that NEA is proactively working with the community and schools to promote such values.

By the way, I remember reading that the recycling bins around the island were choked full of non-recyclable items also... Perhaps the authorities should also step up on its awareness efforts to educate the public on what should/should not be placed in these bins.

I believe most schools have already been on the anti-litterig campaign? On one hand,I do support the 'pick a litter a day' idea as it inculcates in our students the right social habit of cleanliness. On the other hand, I question if this kind of ltter-picking habit could help to make our country cleaner and greener. I view 'picking a litter a day' a reactive action and it is not effective in the long run for Singapore. A better or more effective way is to impart in our young a habit that is automatically self-reenforcing and proactive. Parents should teach their children 'NOT' to litter first before making them pick up others' litter.

I think the worse problem today is not littering, but the WIDESPREAD of advertissements leaflets and the like being pasted onto Bus Stops pillars, Lamp Posts, HDB pillars, Traffic Control Boxes and even TRAFFIC LIGHTS and TRAFFIC SIGN BOARDS.

Aren't these more prominent and serious problems ?
Why are there seemed no actions taken ?

My foreign friends said
"I thought Singapore is a Clean and Green Country,
but ?????????70????? leh."

So MALU!

Thanks.
