Bus and train fares will go up from Oct 1, with most commuters having to pay 4 cents more per trip.

But this time, about four in 10 commuters will not need to pay more or might just end up spending less, according to the Public Transport Council (PTC).This is due to the 15-cent increase in transfer rebate from the current 25 cents to 40 cents, which translates to greater savings for journeys with more transfers.

Cash fares for adult bus and train rides, which have not been adjusted since 2005, will increase by 10 cents across the board. However, the Government has committed $10 million to a Public Transport Fund to provide additional help to lower-income households.

The new fares are due to two factors:

1)       The regular annual revision, which has been kept to 0.7% (lower than the fare cap of 3%)

2)       The move towards a distance-based fare structure

What are your views on the revised transport fares? Please share your views with us.

Raising fares should be coupled with raising of service standards. It can't be the case where fares kept being raised after every year of review by the PTC. It seems as if it's a yearly chance for the Bus and train operators a chance to table for higher profits.

Bus and train operators should gun for higher performance by increasing ridership instead of the "raising fares" approach.

Numb aleady. What can we say or do? Will what we say or do makes a different? Go ahead, we can't say no, so no point asking. What can we do, we need it to move around, just at their mercy.

Ask us something that our suggestion will be taken seriously, honestly how many of the decision makers at the PTC are affected by the fares increment? If it doesn't affect their pocket, it's very difficult for them to say no to any increment in fares, but very easy to say yes.

Get the PTC board to contribute 20% of their salary to help subsidise the fare for the elderly for their medical checkups need. Guarantee they'll fight it with all their energy and creativeness. The PTC board should have more than 50% board members from daily Public Transport commuters, as they will give a better perspective of the situation.

Straits Times should STOP twisting the facts about the latest fare hike. Despite all the spin ST put in its articles, the public is NOT fooled an iota. The majority commuters pay more for fares with the latest hike. There is absolutely no argument about that!!

ST should stop insulting our intelligence by implying otherwise. I'm so sick of ST's subtle brainwashing.

This is after the 2 operators reported healthy profits. It is highly probable that they'll report healthy profits again next year and then apply to increase fares again. Sure sounds like profit-driven operators, like everything else in Singapore.

Is it really necessary to have a fare hike now? It's quite ridiculous, world oil prices has drop ever since, so what is the excuse now? Do the government even care about the people? It's not hand outs that we want, scheming every single penny out of every singaporeans. Singaporeans are helpless at the mercy of an unscrouplous system.
