Some motorists have questioned the recent ERP rate increase and the erection of new ERP gantries along the Singapore River, as they did not consider the traffic congestion in that area to be very bad. However, the Land Transport Authority has explained that the evening traffic speed on major routes in the area, such as North Bridge Road, South Bridge Road, Stamford Road and Bras Basah Road has fallen by 22% compared to two years ago. The LTA believes that the recently announced ERP changes would help to manage the congestion more effectively, resulting in faster travel times. This would in turn lead to lower overall transport costs, and would ultimately help businesses remain competitive.
What are your thoughts on this initiative as a means to help businesses stay competitive? What else can be done to reduce traffic congestion in the area surrounding the Singapore River?

It will kill businesses, why? Increased business operating costs and deterred customers from going there. Businessmen will cry father cry mother in no time. They will experienced it sooner.

Speed drop by 22% over last 2 years is no big deal, considering these roads have shrunk 33% to 25% (1 lane lost to whole day bus lane).

It is not ERP that is going to help the business. It's the overall public transport system!
I have found my stint in HK to be very productive. Once I stayed in a housing estate like our HDB's another time in a condo. In the former, I took the train to work, the latter, the mini-bus (and you get to sit!)
When I go for appointments, it was mostly by train. Unless I am in a real hurry or has lots of stuff to carry, it will be a taxi. I have no problems getting a taxi, even during peak hours, no need to call, no ERP, no CBD, no peak hour surcharge, no such rubbish! Taxi's are easy to find, any time of the day, anywhere.
So if the government really want to help businesses, they would do well to improve the overall public transport system.
Forget about asking SMRT, SBS, the taxi companies to make millions each year. There is such a thing call public service. Put the profits back into making the transport system work for the population, the productivity from the people will pay in other ways!

izzit ? like magic , well done , in that case built more gantries pls !
faster travel times means less cars , less cars means less ppl , so less ppl means good business ? don't understand what kind of logic is that ?

I support LTA decision to put more gantry to solve traffic congestion problem. LTA may like to study how much London charge for vehicle entering London financial district area.

I think the reason given by LTA is not convincing at all. First of all, the traffic congestion in the CBD is largely due to the road works being carried out there.
Furthermore, raising the ERP will only add to business costs as those businesses relying on transport will still have to pay no matter how much the ERP is. e.g. Courier service.
Those who already buy cars will still use their cars because they don't buy cars so that the cars can be parked in the garage. Therefore, the ERP will add to their overall cost of living. To the rich people, ERP is peanuts even if it's adjusted upwards regularly. However, for the middle class, they will feel the squeeze the most especially those who have to rely on cars due to practical reasons. e.g. sales people.
Ultimately, all the extra costs will somehow be passed down to the consumers. Therefore, the cost of living will rise further. It's a vicious cycle.

so don't develop that arear lah , no one will go there anymore like lim chu kang .
what LTA want is quite obvious , saying ERP helping businesses is just an excuse becoz they can't prove it . and i also believe most of the businessmen won't agree about this comment .
