Come April 1, bus and train fares will be cut, saving commuters 2 cents to 14 cents a trip, and even more with transfers. The fare cuts come from transport operators SBS Transit and SMRT deciding to pass on savings from the Budget to commuters, as well as the ongoing transition to distance-based fares.

With the revised fares, commuters can save a minimum of 2 cents per trip. Commuters who make transfers see further reductions, from 14 cents for journeys with one transfer, up to a maximum of 38 cents for three transfers.

PTC chairman Gerard Ee said the fare cuts will 'certainly go a long way to help commuters' during this difficult period.

What are your views on the fare revision? Do you think the revised fares will help to ease the financial burden brought on by the recession?

These fare cut should have come earlier.
In my opinion PTC should seriously consider that the cuts of fare should have first priority for those travelling short distance. I have never seen PTC increase fares during recession period for those who travel short distance. The fact that nitizens take public transport PTC always increase fare for those who travel short distance. Where is the logic? Even kids feel the pinch and the easy calculations make no sense. It should increase fares for those who travel long distance. I hope PTC should re-engineer their mindset as trains and bus always make lot of profits year in and year out. Be honest and sincere, and it's time to change that make sense.

There's been a few rumors and accusations made against the PTC and transport companies in general. While nothing concrete, these are some of the hear say I picked up randomly.

1) PTC is siding the Transport companies because some of the PTC members have vested interests in the transport companies

2) Monopoly in transport companies. 2 major companies in charge of MRT and bus but they are being given different zones so monopolistc powers exist.

3) Government spent a lot of money in the MRT and wants to recover them ASAP, to the extent sacrificing certain passenger comforts, forcing them to use MRT, and forcing alternate transport companies out of business via excessive regulations.

As such, any drop in fares or otherwise will always be considered as an excuse or gimmick to pacify the public. Like for instance, previous fare rise reason is increasing cost of business, like oil prices increases and wage increases. However current oil prices are low and wage cost is lowered ( via government subsidy ). So do we see a corresponding drop in prices? And with the doubts from the 3 points above, it will be extremely hard to say that the price cut proposed by PTC is reasonable.

I believe a lot of work is to dispel any myth or untruths of the above 3 points, or if it is true, to stop and remedy them ASAP.

1) PTC selection : Should change every year and to include a high level government offical, an activist or opposition member. Or a group of randomly selected individuals from the public to act as voice, jury to a core group.

2) Stop the monopoly ASAP. Either award MRT or Bus not both to the same company. Have a list of directors or vested interest members in board to prevent too much collabration in price setting.

3) Include a high level government work group to review current policies and making them public.

4) Include high level governement official in transport company board to be non executive directors to ensure no unfair practices.

High level government officials should be elected MPs and regular changed. Elected MP will have to answer to public while regular changes should help prevent complaceny or corruption .

It is NOT fair, as the pump prices have been CUT for so many rounds! The fare reduction is nothing compare with the fare increases. Why such things can happened? There's no meaning in it. Are we getting the right person in the job? Other countries sacked ministers who cannot perform satisfactorily and below par, why not us?

Okay lets see, one day single transfer to & fro, 2 cents plus 14 cents multiply by 2. Saved 32 cents per day Lets say 26 days per month, therefore, per month I'll get to save 32 multiply by 26, that is $8.32 per person per month. It's not fantastic, but better than nothing. Can get four plates of $2.00 chicken rice with 32 cents spare, lol, not bad lah.

Why April 1st, what happen to March?

Just my humble calculation,

SOS.

Singapore is my homeland.

Except that $2.00 chicken rice now cost $3.00 and if you want to travel to ulu places where they still sell you $1.50 chicken rice for $2.00 that will eat into the saving already.

Hey, you forget about the transport cost to go to the ulu place. $1.70 to and $1.70 back. So even if each place at $1.50, your total cost incured to reach the plate of $1.50 is $4.90, not to mention about your time if you are unemployed and have all the time in the world !!
